YES! There is an answer. When your friends from abroad ask to go out for a good, authentic English meal you can take them to Shepherd’s in London.
Shepherd’s, in Marsham Street, Westminster, is a brilliant antidote to the LOUD, SHOUTY places that have become so fashionable. It is private, discrete and very comfortable. The staff are professional, efficient, and attentive without hovering. And the food is good. Simple, straightforward and traditional. Just what’s needed when you want a change from the ever-more-complicated, pretentious cuisine that has even filtered down to pub food. Interesting that trendsetting, three-star Michelin chef, Joël Robuchon, turned his back on all that last year with his new restaurant in Paris, l’Atelier, opting for simple French cuisine using the best ingredients.
Shepherd’s works on the same principle, offering excellent meat including roast beef, game in season and great fish. Dover sole is a treat, and when it’s on the menu, their monkfish rivals the best. The menu changes once a month but keeps popular favourites including retro desserts burnt Cambridge cream (Crème brulée!), sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess!
For a return to the best of your British gastronomic roots surrounded by the buzz of political Westminster, Shepherd’s is well worth a visit. Prices: £26 per head for 2 courses, or £29 for 3. Wine from £14 a bottle or by the glass.
