22/07/2007 Disappointed
The Homestead is now a japanese restaurant called 'Mizu'. I went there last night for the first time and was impressed with the food. The service unfortunately, was terrible. The manager has never run a restaurant before 4 months ago and sadly it showed. Attempts were made to remove our food on 3 occasions, once while my chopsticks were still in transit toward my mouth. This, coupled with the fact that an entire course was missed out and our table, although booked in advance was still bearing the remnants of the last diners and was not set with clean cloth or china, made for a fairly unsatisfactory experience. What a shame. The pleasant surprise, however was seeing the waitress who used to serve us in the old days when it was still the homestead. She must be disappointed too.

As any reader could quite clearly see from the comments listed below, this was once a delightful, cosy, and highly successful family restaurant, serving popular food at reasonable prices. Sadly, after shutting its doors for nearly 3 months, the redeveloped "Nineteen", which has opened in the Homestead’s place, contrasts as sparse, unfriendly, and extortionately overpriced. The interior has been gutted, and the traditional open brickwork and cosy film/photography decorations have been replaced by white paint and halogen lights. There are no pictures. If the Spartan interior wasn't enough to put off customers, the menu certainly is. As a resident of Cobham since 1986, and a customer at the Homestead from my first night until the present, I was disgusted that my family's regular meal of nachos, burgers, pizza (incidentally only available on the new 'lunchtime' menu), and a couple of bottles of house white, which previously cost less than £50, came to over £100 without tip. The steaks top the menu at £21, and the house wine starts at £14, which is more than La Capanna, the prestigious and excellent Italian by Church Street. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry that the Pink Champagne cost £10 more per bottle than the American Bar at London's Savoy Hotel. The Homestead once occupied a niche market, serving excellent valued comfort food with smiling waitresses who knew the customers by name. I remember many a childhood birthday when it featured as my immediate first choice of restaurant due to my excitement at seeing "Happy Birthday Nicholas" displayed on the flashing announcements board. For 15 years, we never missed a Christmas Eve, and I fondly remember the Manageress's "I believe in Santa Claus" badge. Such an item couldn't look less out of place today. Upon leaving "Nineteen", my family and I shared more than a moment of sadness, for so many family memories used to hang alongside the Port and Cheese painting, and the life-size poster of James Dean. Post-school-plays, Sports Days, Going off to University, Congratulations dinners, and even post family-argument-dinners were shared around the little wooden tables. From patronising a restaurant as much as once a week for 19 of my 22 years, it is with the most heartfelt regret that I fear I’ll never desire to set foot in there again.

It's the best place I know for burgers. I don't live in Surrey now, but I always try to pop in for a visit when I'm in the vicinity. The waitress there has been working there for almost as long as I remember!

A really super small restaurant which is not owned by one of the chains and serves lots of home cooked dishes. Great value.
